Personal profile
Research Interests
My research interests lie in the field of Latin American film studies, with a particular emphasis on the political work of cinema and its relationship to processes of memory. I joined Royal Holloway in July 2009, after completing my PhD at the University of Liverpool. My doctoral thesis focused on contemporary Argentine and Brazilian women’s film production, examining the role of the cinematic body in relation to the repressive dictatorial regimes experienced in both countries. As part of my Masters degree in World Cinemas (University of Leeds), I produced a dissertation entitled 'Violence and the Popular in Colombian Cinema', and have a longstanding interest in the representation of the Colombian armed conflict on screen.
My current project (2009-2013) explores the configurations of authorship, authority and cultural memory in relation to Indigenous film production in Latin America. This research considers the political and aesthetic contributions of documentary and fiction films that are produced by, or in some cases in collaboration with, Indigenous filmmakers and communities. In particular I am interested in issues surrounding intercultural collaborations and aesthetics, and the ways in which specific and diverse cultural repertoires are transmitted through film and circulate on an international platform. I speak French, Spanish and Portuguese and would welcome enquiries related to Indigenous filmmaking and Latin American film production more generally.
