Personal profile
At the moment, I am investigating mass participation endurance sport events. I am interested in the way that spectator positioning shifts between participant and outsider, and I am looking at the cultural and political implications of this hugely popular performance form. I am investigating this area through participation as well as through cultural and political theory. I am drawing on the work of Jacques Rancière, Judith Butler, Hannah Arendt and Ernesto Laclau, among others. My research also involves running over 1,000 miles a year, and connecting this experience with theoretical perspectives of embodiment and aesthetics.
Although I do not make works for theatre any more, I have a background in disability arts and culture, and was Associate Director for Graeae Theatre Company during the 1990s. I have also worked as a director for a number of other companies including The Lyric, Hammersmith and The Nuffield, Southampton.
I am looking forward to the paralymic games in London in 2012 and am starting to have exciting conversations about the meanings of the disabled sporting body on the world stage.
Teaching
My undergraduate class Disability Culture and Performance draws upon new research in this field. It is also open to guests and to interested graduate and postgraduate students.
Personal profile
I'm 38 and I come from Preston in Lancashire. I am trying to interact creatively with my international colleagues without flying and I would love to hear from anybody who is thinking about running conferences via the web.
