Helen was appointed Lecturer of Composition in January 2010 and teaches on a variety of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Helen studied at the Royal College of Music with Julian Anderson and Edwin Roxburgh, where she later held a Legal & General Junior Fellowship from 2005-7, and was a Leornard Bernstein Composition Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center.
Recent and upcoming commissions include works for the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Britten Sinfonia, Tanglewood Music Center, Hebrides Ensemble and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Helen was the winner of the 2003 Making Music award at the 2003 British Composer Awards and she is a member of New Voicesat Sound and Music. Her music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and 4.
Helen’s music has been performed widely in the UK and in throughout Europe and America. Her orchestral piece, Virga was performed at the 2009 BBC Proms by the BBCSO, conducted by Oliver Knussen and has received further performances with the Orchestre de Paris in Paris with Pierre, Boulez and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Harding in August 2010. She was appointed Associate Composer with the Hallè Orchestra from 2011 and is published exclusively by Chester Music
